Easy Fun DIY Box Photo Shoot for 2025 Christmas Cards and Posts!

Easy DIY Christmas Box Photo Shoot

Using Just a Cardboard Box & Your Phone!

Looking for a cute, creative holiday photo idea that doesn’t take hours or require fancy gear? Try a DIY cardboard box Christmas photo! It’s quick, festive, and perfect for Christmas cards or social posts - all with things you already have at home.

We decided to try the cardboard box photo shoot as a family, and honestly, we had way more fun than expected. My crew is a little extra (in the best way...ha!), so what started as “let’s take a quick picture” turned into laughter, props flying everywhere, the cats trying to climb in the box, and eventually us filming our own mini video, because...why not?

Here’s how to make it happen in just a few simple steps:

1. Grab a Cardboard Box

Choose a cardboard box large enough that someone can comfortably put their head and shoulders in; a medium to large Amazon box works great.

2. Add a Little Holiday Flair

Keep it simple! Tape a bit of garland, wrap the outside in cute paper, or pop a bow on the corner. A tiny strand of fairy lights? Even better.

3. Bring a Prop

Think Santa hat, mug of cocoa, candy cane, ornament, or even your pet popping into the frame. One or two props make the shot fun without cluttering it.

4. Use Your Phone (That’s All You Need!)

Place your phone on a stack of books or a tripod, and don't forget to wipe off the lens. Face a window for soft, natural light...it makes a huge difference.

5. Pose in the Box & Smile

Try a few expressions: smile, laugh, “peek-a-boo,” or a silly face. Pets and kids make this extra adorable.

6. Snap a Few & Pick Your Favorite

Take several pics, then choose the best one. A quick crop and a little brightness adjustment in your phone’s editor give it a clean, polished look.

7. Share the Holiday Cheer

Use it as your Christmas card, post it on social, text it to family, or add it to your holiday newsletter. It’s festive, cute, and totally DIY!  And...make sure to send it to me or tag me on social media.  I would love to see what you create!

I rounded up some instructional videos for you: one is a super quick how-to for fast inspiration, and the other is an 8-minute walkthrough from a professional photographer for those pro tips.

No matter how your photos turn out, you’ll have a fun story to share.  And that’s what makes this little holiday project so special.  Now grab a box, gather your people, and make some holiday magic. Happy photographing and Merry Christmas from the Sheldon Family!
